The Virunga mountains stretch for about 80 km in an east west direction. The range lie across the African Rift Valley, a region where portions of the earth's crust are separating.

Lava flows from Nyiragongo volcano regularly reach Lake Kivu. Nyiragongo Volcano is located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, north of the city of Goma. The summit of Nyiragongo contains a 1.2 km wide summit crater, which is flanked by two older volcanoes - Baruta and Shaheru.
